Szeged is located in the South-East of Hungary, upon the banks of the river Tisza.

How to reach Szeged:
by flight
by train from Budapest,
by bus from Budapest
by car.

 

There are no direct flight connections to Szeged. If you plan to travel by plane, your best choice is Hungary's international airport: Budapest Ferihegy, with two terminals.

Flights of foreign airlines arrive at and depart from Terminal 2B.
MALÉV (Hungarian Airlines) flights arrive at and depart from Terminal 2A.
Low cost flights arrive at and depart from Terminal 1.

At the airport, we recommend the following options to travel to Szeged:

·        minibus from Budapest airport to Szeged, (most convenient and straightforward)

·        train from Budapest downtown (Budapest Nyugati Railway Station);

·        bus from Budapest Népliget bus terminal

·        car rental.

A minibus shuttle service from both terminals of Budapest Ferihegy airport to Szeged is available; the one-way ticket costs 3500 HUF.

The buses of this service arrive to TESCO hypermarket in Szeged. (You may ask the driver for an additional lift to the hotel (for a tip of approx. 1000 HUF), especially if you arrive late night). Otherwise you should take trolleybus No. 8 with destination “Dugonics tér” and get off at “Anna kút”, and then walk 5 minutes (see map B) along Tisza Lajos körút (bent road with rails) or you may take a taxi from the TESCO terminal to the hotel (appr 1000 HUF)

 

For the train and normal bus services you have to go to  Budapest downtown.

To do so we recommend you to check in at the Airport Minibus Service advertised at the airport,

and ask for the destination you wish to go to.
For the train connection to
Szeged, ask for Budapest Nyugati Railway Station.

For bus  connection to Szeged ask for Budapest Népliget  
The minibus service is very reliable and a one-way trip costs 2300 HUF, return is 3900 HUF.

The time needed to reach your destinantion depends on the traffic, but at least 25 minutes to  Budapest Népliget, and 40 minutes to Budapest Nyugati.

You may also take bus No 200 from the airport to Kőbánya-Kispest Railway station, where all trains to Szeged stop about 12 minutes after their departure from Budapest Nyugati (see timetable below).

There is also an underground (METRO) connection from Kőbánya-Kispest Railway station to Budapest Nyugati.

 

A taxi costs around 4500 HUF from Ferihegy to Budapest Nyugati Railway Station.

Most major car rental companies have an office at the airport. Please make a reservation before departure.

 

RAILWAY is a convenient means of transport from Budapest to Szeged. The trains to Szeged depart from the railway station Budapest Nyugati (“Budapest Nyugati Pályaudvar” in Hungarian). Szeged is the final station for any train from Budapest. For the location of the railway station in Szeged, see the map A.  We recommend you to choose the InterCity (IC) trains, with compulsory seat reservation, marked with [R] in the following timetable (the ticket price shown is a one-way fare, the return ticket is double):

BUS is another possibility to reach Szeged from BudapestBuses  to Szeged depart from “Budapest Népliget” terminal, and arrive to Szeged Bus terminal (Szeged autóbuszállomás), “Mars square”  (see maps A and B ). Note that this is different from the minibus terminal. One way tickets cost  2500 HUF.

CAR: In order to use highways you have to buy a vignette (type D1), at a gas station or at the car rental, costing 1520 HUF for a period of 4 days, (or 2500 HUF for a period of 10 days, if you stay longer in Hungary). (If you arrive from Serbia, you do not need to by any vignette, the highway M5 is free from the border to Szeged.
From Budapest to Szeged you have to follow the M5 (= E75) highway. Please note that in contrary to most maps (both printed and online) highway M5 has already reached the border to Serbia, thus you can drive to Szeged on the M5. If you arrive from Budapest, take the Exit 159, Szeged-Észak, drive East ca. 3 km on M43, then turn right (South), the road leads you into the city centre. See

Public transportation in Szeged: Tickets for public transportation can be bought in special ticket selling booths e.g. in the street called “Vár utca” (next to the square “Széchenyi tér”, close to the big Post office), or at the bus station in square “Mars tér”, or at the Railway station. These tickets are for one trip only, and cost 150 HUF. The same tickets are used for buses, trams, and trolleybuses. Tickets can also be bought on board of any public transportational vehicle, from the driver, these cost 200 HUF. Tickets for 1 and 3 days are also available, these cost 500 and 1255 HUF respectively.
